Finally, a Use for Old Business Cards: Mini Flipbooks

30 Mar 2011

Materials

2 small binder clips
12+ business cards, one-sided
markers
pencil

If You Can Eyeball the Art…

  1. Stack the business cards.
  2. Attach the clips.
  3. Using only the half opposite the clips, draw the frames.
  4. Flip, and watch the lines wiggle. I love the obviously hand-drawn look.

If You Prefer Precision…

  1. When making a flipbook, only one half of the paper is used. Decide which half you’re going to use.
  2. Work backwards. First, draw the last frame.
  3. Place a fresh card on top of the first. Line them up flush to the same end.
  4. Hold the two cards up to a light (or place on a lightbox) and use a pencil to make light guide marks. Draw the “previous” frame.
  5. Repeat until you get to the beginning of your animation.
  6. Attach the clips on the side opposite of the drawings.
  7. Flip, and admire your work.
