Bubble Paintings and More… The 2006 Addabbo Show
14 Jan 2011
In 2005, I had not painted for 10 years and severely doubted that I still could. With the support and encouragement of many, I overcame a stubborn painter’s block.
One thing led to another, and in 2006, I displayed these paintings at the Addabbo Federal Building in Jamaica, Queens.
This proved to me that dreams can come true. And that I didn’t forget how to paint.
- Untitled (2005) 36" x 24", acrylic on canvas, by Gloria Wong
- Asparagus (1999) 24" x 20", oil on canvas, by Gloria Wong
- Uppercut (2005) 16" x 20", acrylic and paraffin on canvas by Gloria Wong
This image evokes bloody noses in a boxing ring, or bullies on a playground.
- Midnight Romp (2005) 24" x 36", oil on canvas
Cloud-like shapes skip across a clear night sky, off to seek adventure.
- Reliquary (2005) 20" x 16", oil on canvas, by Gloria Wong
I almost named this one “Cocoon,” as the gauzy package looked bug-spun. However, I think the name “Reliquary” captures the precious quality of something swathed, mummy-like, private yet on display, esconced in velvet.
- When Pigs Fly (2005) 24" x 36", oil on canvas, by Gloria Wong
- Night Moves (2005) 10" x 16", oil on canvas, by Gloria Wong

- Salmon (2006) 30" x 22", oil on canvas, by Gloria Wong
The first of my bubble paintings, Salmon describes biological things: the brilliant color and plumpness of salmon egg, or the density of cells under a microscope.
